Where to stay on the big island

So we have 10 nights on the big island on July and I'm struggling to work out where to stay to make the most of it and see as much of the island as possible. Maybe 3 nights around Waimea, 4 in Kona and 3 in Puna? Advice would be very welcome.We are not particularly bothered about amenities - more scenery.
